MecAgent has launched the second version of its AI for CAD software, using its agent harness to enlist GPT-6 Astra into powering CAD designs directly within an existing CAD package.
The CAD Agent works within an open Solidworks session – capable of Text-to-CAD, Image-to-CAD, CAD-to-Drawing, Drawing-to-CAD and STEP-to-SLDPRT with a reconstructed feature tree – modelling parts, adding them to assemblies, applying materials, and renaming, exporting or writing macros into the feature tree.
Other tasks it can run include feature tree cleanup, motion creation from text, translating and exporting CAD files, standards verification, assembly-to-BOM, and creating exploded views, among others.
A demo showcases a RC helicopter – some 56 parts, two subassemblies, including motion linking the gears and rotors, but no electronics – being built in under five hours of unmanned runtime.
Rather than generating individual parts, MecAgent is moving to tackle extended, multi-stage design tasks inside industry standard parametric CAD software.
MecAgent itself describes the broader capability as “spec-to-CAD”. An engineer can provide a set of requirements and have the agent perform the sequence of CAD operations needed to construct the design, rather than explicitly modelling every component.
According to MecAgent CPO Alexandre Senet, an Onshape variant is on MecAgent’s roadmap for the coming months, reporting that its existing AI copilot has in excess of 35,000 installs.
