The stylish Dell Precision M3800: a far cry from the days when Dell’s mobile workstations adopted a plastic consumer laptop chassis

Dell is set to up the ante in mobile workstations by introducing a stylish laptop with an ultra high-definition display that sports even more pixels than the Retina Display in the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Due to launch later this year the Dell Precision M3800 features a 3,200 x 1,800 pixel IGZO panel with multi-touch standard on all systems.

In addition to offering incredible resolution Dell claims the Precision M3800 will be the first mobile workstation to be less than ¾ of an inch (18mm), weighing just over 2kg.

By mobile workstation, Dell means a laptop that comes with Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certifications, of which the Precision M3800 will have plenty, including AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, DS Catia and Solidworks, PTC Creo, Siemens NX and TeamCenter.

At the moment specifications are pretty thin on the ground but we do know that the Precision M3800 will feature 4th generation Core i7 Quad Core CPUs as well as an Nvidia Quadro K1100M GPU. Comparing the keyboard / screen ratio in the picture above it looks like the display will be 15-inches or thereabouts.

While the Precision M3800 looks to be a very exciting piece of kit, it likely to be more suited to entry-level to mid-range 3D CAD. The Quadro K1100M is at the lower-end of Nvidia’s new Kepler family of GPUs and we would also expect the QHD+ display (which has nearly three times as many pixels as standard HD) to slow things down a bit.

In the past, when we compared a 3,840 x 2,160 powerwall to a standard HD display we found 3D performance dropped by about 20%.

We hope to bring you a full review as soon as the sleek looking Precision M3800 is out.
