The new XTAL 3 CAVU (Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited) Mixed Reality (MR) Headset from Vrgineers has been announced, with advanced AMD and Nvidia abilities for rapid visual processing.

The two full RGB fast-switching 4K LCD displays, allowing 120 Hz @ QHD per eye, utilise 24 MP image sensors that are connected to Xilinx FPGA PCIe16x card – a chip manufacturer acquired by AMD – via optical cables.

Vrgineers describes this as a  ‘hardcoded’ processor dedicated to calculating high resolution mixed reality images in just a single millisecond, while the direct connection with the latest Nvidia Quadro RTX A6000 GPU bypasses the CPU, reducing overall latency to a minimum.

As a result, the Quadro RTX A600 is entirely dedicated to virtual reality calculations, conserving resources and enhancing performance.

“By utilising AMD XILINX FPGA in a combination with Nvidia Quadro card, we found a way to provide so much needed performance boost for mixed reality, which is far above of two fastest graphical cards, with much lower latency as well as power consumption,” explains Vrgineers CEO Marek Polcak.

The XTAL 3 CAVU design is built from lightweight carbon fibre, making it lighter than previous 700g XTAL Vrgineer headsets, while hand tracking is covered by an embedded Ultraleap sensor. The HMD has software support for Steam VR and OpenXR drivers, Unity, Unreal, and other game engine plugins, and C++ libraries (DirectX, OpenGL, Vulkan).

Its unclear yet whether the field of view of the existing XTAL 3 MR MHD will be improved upon from its current figures of 180° horizontal and 120° vertical degrees.
