Not just an engineer, but a Marks & Spencer engineer

Structural engineer Roma Agrawal forms part of M&S’s ‘Leading Ladies’ line-up

British high street staple Marks & Spencer has today announced its Spring Summer clothing ranges campaign, modelled by its selection of ‘Leading Ladies’.

So far, so standard. Yet the ‘Leading Ladies’ have something in common; they are no standard clothes horses, all are much celebrated for their talents (or ‘women of substance’ as the Guardian newspaper has named them) including actresses, singers, chefs, and – at last! – an engineer.

Roma Agrawal is an associate structural engineer at WSP Group – most famously making London’s tallest landmark, the Shard, stand upright and remain that way – and will appear in forthcoming adverts modelling Marks & Spencer’s wares.

Roma will join the stellar line-up of Lulu Kennedy, Rachel Khoo, Alek Wek, Rita Ora, Emma Thompson, Annie Lennox and Doreen Lawrence, having been photographed by Annie Liebovitz

We recently voiced our opinion on the need for more designers and engineers in the spotlight, and there could hardly be a better person to shout about how amazing the professions are than Roma.

Having already taken to the stage to express the importance of engineers, she is slap bang in the middle of a multi-million pound advertising campaign showing that the career is not just worthwhile and exciting, but that it deserves to be as celebrated as much as musicians and oscar winners.

Much of this is down to the canny people at Marks & Spencer’s marketing department, but we can only hope it goes further and that more people start seeing engineering for what it is.
