ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 and P16s Gen 2 mobile workstations feature integrated AMD Radeon 700M Series GPUs with pro drivers making them affordable, power efficient options for CAD workflows, while ThinkPad P16v offers more all round performance

Lenovo has unveiled three new ThinkPad mobile workstations powered by AMD Ryzen Pro 7040 Series mobile processors with integrated AMD Radeon 700M Series GPUs.

The new ThinkPad P16v, P16s Gen 2 and P14s Gen 4 follow on from the Intel-based ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, P1 Gen 6, P16v i Gen 1, P14s i Gen 4, P16s i Gen 2 which were announced in May 2023, bringing the total number of current ThinkPad mobile workstation models to nine.

The big play for the 14-inch ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 and 16-inch ThinkPad P16s Gen 2 are affordability and power efficiency, thanks to the AMD Ryzen Pro 7040U Series processor.

The top-end AMD Ryzen 7 7840U, for example, features 8 cores, 16 threads, a 3.3 GHz base and a 5.1 GHz boost frequency, all in a 28W Thermal Design Power (TDP).

The integrated RDNA 3 AMD Radeon 780M GPU, which shares the processor’s TDP, comes with 4 GB of VRAM and an AMD Pro graphics driver with ISV certifications, making it suitable for mainstream 3D CAD and BIM workflows.

The ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 and P16s Gen 2 are very similar in terms of core specifications. They offer the same choice of processors – the AMD Ryzen 7 7540U or Ryzen 7 7840U –up to 2TB of M.2 SSD storage and up to 64 GB of LPDDR5x 6,400MHz memory, double that of their predecessors.

Both machines are available in ‘Villi Black’ or ‘Storm Grey’, have several display options, including OLED and low blue light displays, and an optional 5MP camera. The P16s Gen 2 offers a higher capacity battery option (up to 86Wh) and a higher resolution display option (up to 4K).

The 16-inch ThinkPad P16v is more powerful, offering a choice of AMD Ryzen 9 Pro 7040 HS Series Mobile processors with up to 8 cores, 16 threads, a 4.0 GHz base, 5.2 GHz boost and a TDP of 35-54W.

The ThinkPad P16v includes the same integrated AMD Radeon 780M GPU but can also be configured with the significantly more powerful Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada Generation laptop GPU (8 GB), which is suitable for CAD and entry-level visualisation workflows.

The laptop comes in ‘Thunder Black’ only, has a dual thermal outflow to maximize cooling, and an optional ‘super bright’ 800nit IPS panel with low blue light.

Starting weights are 1.34 kg for the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4, 1.70 kg for the ThinkPad P16s Gen 2 and 2.20 kg for the ThinkPad P16v.

The new laptops will be available starting in August 2023.
