Stratasys has acquired the technology portfolio of Arevo, including its Intellectual Property (IP), including patents in carbon fibre printing and Z-strength improvement, following Arevo’s closure in 2023.

The Arevo technologies, including localised laser melting and roller compaction to improve Z-axis part strength; in-situ and AI build monitoring and hardware design, are expected to become part of  Stratasys’ FDM 3D printing portfolio to extend its potential manufacturing applications.

Previously based in Silicon Valley, USA, Arevo, Inc ceased operations in 2023, having looked to manufacture carbon fibre composite products without expensive moulds and overheads. The company found some initial success among bicycle manufacturing, although sales of its Aqua 3D printers were cancelled in favour of full time bike production, before the company’s demise.

“The technology we’ve acquired allows for increasingly improved isotropy of physical properties in FDM parts, which opens up additional use for customers,” said Stratasys chief industrial business officer Rich Garrity.

“This investment continues our commitment to focusing our organic and inorganic innovation on applications and use cases that provide real value to our manufacturing customers, ensuring that Stratasys will continue to be the most relevant and attractive partner moving forward.”

Stratasys says that the acquisition will be allow it to accelerate usage of FDM printing applications by eliminating further customer adoption barriers associated with requirements for higher performing parts – including strength and isotropy, more reliable and consistent builds, and improved system throughput for better parts economics.

“This acquisition of assets reflects Stratasys’ clear strategy to create practical value for its customers by investing in innovation, through both organic R&D as well as the acquisition of technology and IP,” said a spokesperson.
