Leading AM bureaux invest in green vapour smoothing technology

Forecast 3D, RapidCenter, FKM and Hasenauer & Hesser have all invested in DyeMansion Vapor Smoothing technology in order to adopt safer, more sustainable practices.

DyeMansion introduced Powerfuse S vapour smoothing in 2019, eliminating the need for open solvent baths and PFAS, or ‘forever chemicals,’ in vapour smoothing.

It now has an installed base of 50 machines and many manufacturers on its customer list.

The transition to DyeMansion’s Powerfuse S solution has allowed manufacturers to transition from PFAS to green solvents for the vapour smoothing of 3D printed plastic parts.

It also means that the green solvent can be recycled directly in a closed-loop system, further reducing costs and environmental footprint.

PFAS-based solvents are subject to phase-out plans and strict regulations due to their environmental impact.

They also require strict safety regulations for personnel, resulting in companies investing in safety training and operating facilities with extraction systems and safety measures.

Switching to green solvents allows companies to reduce expensive safety measures while also lowering their greenhouse emissions and the release of ‘forever chemicals’ into the environment.

3D printing bureau Forecast 3D is one of multiple companies which have added a Powerfuse S to their portfolio.

“The benefits of a green solvent – coupled with automation – allow for an environmentally conscious offering at scale as part of our greater manufacturing solutions portfolio,” said Ken Burns, vice president commerical at GKN Additive.

Endeavor 3D was one of the first companies to invest in the technology.

“It’s unsurprising that others are joining us and embracing vapour smoothing technology,” said CEO Phil Arnold.

“In the past three years, our customers have benefitted greatly by this investment.”
