MeganeX 8K VR headset developed with Panasonic weighs less than a smartphone

The MeganeX superlight 8K VR headset has been announced by Shiftall, with the unique design of the main unit weighing only 185g – much less than a Varjo XR 4 or Vive Focus Vision.

The product features Panasonic Group’s proprietary pancake lens and offers an 8K/90 Hz/10 bit micro OLED display with a resolution of 3552 x 3840 per eye and 27 million pixels.

SteamVR-compatible VR applications can be displayed using the MeganeX superlight 8K powered exclusively by Nvidia RTX professional and Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs. The 10-bit micro OLED display supports 10-bit colour enabled by the Nvidia VRWorks  software development kit.

Additionally, the MeganeX superlight 8K has dual microphones, an electric IPD adjustment mechanism and a glasses-free diopter adjustment feature (ranging from 0D to -7D) that gets rid of the need for custom lenses. While the headset has omitted inbuilt speakers and hand tracking, it features a USB-C port that can connect third-party headphones or facial/hand tracking hardware.

The design of the unit makes it an appealing choice of designers at their desks, switching between traditional screens and VR, with the MeganeX superlight 8K headset featuring a flip-up mechanism, enabling quick transitions between virtual and real environments.

Shiftall describes the headset as a ‘near-zero facial pressure design’, which supports the weight solely through a thin, flexible head strap and a padded forehead rest, reducing the force typically exerted on the sides of the head and cheeks by VR headsets.

Also built into the design is the ability to add a handheld stem to the bottom of the headset, allowing the user to raise it like opera glasses for quick interactions.
