Pointwise adds automated meshing in v18.4

The latest release of Pointwise’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) mesh generation software has been released, with Pointwise v18.4 including the first component of a planned suite of new automation features.

Named Flashpoint, these new automation features begin with automatic surface meshing added to the latest version, helping speed up the CFD process greatly.

“A suitable mesh is just a stepping stone to a CFD flow-field solution,” said Pointwise president John Chawner. “Too often, that stepping stone is a speed bump because of the effort required to generate a suitable mesh on a realistic geometry model.”

Chawner explained that the new Flashpoint surface meshing combines automation with control, taking as its input a geometry model and a handful of user-defined goals for the mesh and automatically generating a geometry resolving, hybrid unstructured mesh with anisotropy.

This should help simplify the most time-consuming preprocessing CFD procedure, which in some cases can mean a reduction in time from days to minutes, allowing users to concentrate more on their CFD solutions.

“Flashpoint is a game changer for meshing. Pointwise has managed to offer the automation of top-down meshing while maintaining its powerful suite of bottom-up capabilities,” said Dr. Chris Sideroff, Applied CCM principal director, and participant in its Beta testing. “Quality meshing Pointwise has always been known for is now achievable in minutes.”
