Available in a range of sizes up to 1TB in capacity the Samsung SSD 840 EVO brings Solid State Drives one step closer to the mainstream

Solid State Drives (SSDs) are one of the most important additions to a workstation, but capacity and price have been major inhibitors to widespread adoption.

This is changing fast though and Samsung’s new 840 EVO delivers 1TB of lightning fast storage for just over £500.

While this isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination (10x more expensive than a 1TB hard disk drive (HDD)) it does mean you don’t need a secondary HDD to store the bulk of your CAD data.

The 840 EVO includes a couple of interesting new features designed to boost read and write performance.

For read, a new RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) Mode helps boost performance by caching frequently used data in DRAM memory. For write, ‘TurboWrite’ writes data to a high performance buffer, which then gets flushed into the main SSD storage when idle.

The 840 EVO is available in five different capacities: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB and comes with a three year warranty.

The 120GB model is available for an incredible £87, which should be an excellent proposition for budget workstations, where operating system and applications are stored on the SSD and data held on an HDD.

Samsung also offers a neat Migration tool and upgrade pack which makes it incredibly easy to swap out your existing HDD.

We’ve been putting the new 840 EVO through its paces this week. Look out for a full review soon.
