The first consumer product to feature Google Tango’s 3D depth sensing technology has arrived in the shape of Lenovo’s latest smartphone – the $500 Phab 2 Pro.
Within the smartphone a special IR camera – the core technology is a CMOS-based imager – enables depth sensing based on PMD’s Time-of-Flight 3D technology, is integrated, allowing a real-time 3D point cloud of the environment that gives the phone a understanding of its environment and motion.
The sensor is a miniaturised version of the Google Tango technology that has been popping up in various tablets, and now allows consumer apps such as VR style games, but expect some more professional uses such as 3D scanning to emerge among the 100+ apps Lenovo envisions.
The Phab 2 Pro is a hefty bit of kit – a 6.4-inch pocket burster – but as the first phone of its kind, expect this type of technology to come to the fore in years to come.
