z.T is the official 2014 zenon Challenge mascot. The competition combines the complexity of the automation industry with the creativity and fun of LEGO MINDSTORMS

Earlier this year COPA-DATA, an industrial automation software provider, launched its biennial competition – zenon Challenge.

Both existing and potential members of the COPA-DATA Partner Community are invited to use the company’s ergonomic HMI/SCADA software zenon as the visualisation and control system to power LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 creations.

With the competition deadline of 16 October, there is still time to get a team together, enter the challenge and submit a video of your amazing creation.

This video will not only be judged by a panel of judges, who will be looking at three main criteria; project design, usability and overall creativity, but will also be judged by the general public who’ll be able to vote for their favourite.

The first zenon Challenge, in 2012, was won by Polish team, SYNERGY; its bird-shaped robot collected balls and assigned them to particular containers according to colour

This year the competition has caught the attention of British and Irish companies – namely DBIS Ltd from Doncaster, APD Ltd (Amber Programmable Design Ltd) from Annan and SL Controls from Collooney – and the organisers are hoping more will enter.

First prize is €1,000 to be used for a zenon Challenge party, plus a Sony Action Cam.

Second prize is a Windows 8.1 tablet and third is a Sony Action Cam.

“With the launch of zenon 7.11 earlier this year we are really excited to see what new ideas the teams can come up with,” says Beth Ragdale, partner manager at COPA-DATA UK.

“In 2012 the standard of entries was very high and thus we’re looking forward to seeing how the teams will take full advantage of the EV3 features that are now fully integrated in the zenon Logic Editor. This provides an enhanced environment in which the software can run.”
