Making a giant slide for the world’s biggest cruise liner, Harmony of the Sea

What’s 10 stories tall and purple?

While the world is finding much to be amused at by London’s Orbit sculpture finally finding a use by being fitted with a slide, German engineers have been busy building one of their own for out at sea.

At 10 stories high the Ultimate Abyss is not only the tallest slide at sea – being parked on the world’s largest cruise liner, Harmony of the Seas – but also an amazing engineering feat.

Watch this video to get an idea of the design and verification process, including a natty CAD model of how the giant slide fits to the ship, some visualisations, and the bloke calling himself “the world’s only Thrill Engineer’. The sheer scale and skills for making it are worth persevering for.
