Vive Studios has launched featuring an ‘industry-standard professional CAD engine’ to enables 3D solid modeling within Virtual Reality (VR) on the HTC Vive headset.
Using an interface based on natural two-handed motions, MakeVR utilises Vive’s room-scale VR to give creators a virtual space to explore and design objects.
The new new Pro release adds tools for the precision alignment of objects using grids and rulers, jigs, snapping, surface tracking, and mirroring, letting the user create solid-model content with positional and rotational accuracy in their virtual workshop.
“This precision, CAD-based, content creation,” says a Vive statement, “is what separates MakeVR Pro from other immersive modeling, sculpting, and painting apps.
“The expanded level of control that the precision tools provide showcase virtual reality as a natural, powerful, and progressive medium for 3D object modelling.
In-app tutorials guide the user through learning the functionalities of the software, while MakeVR Pro has the ability to export files as STL or OBJ files, and direct links from within the app to connect with Shapeways for online 3D printing.
“This new layer of precision, combined with Vive’s room-scale technology, paves the way for MakeVR Pro to become the primary 3D object modeling tool for professionals,” said Vive Studios GM Joel Breton.
“Users can now manipulate objects with increased precision to take advantage of the fidelity and space that VR allows, much like the way carpenters and machinists work in their real-world shops.”
MakeVR Pro joins a growing field of VR-based design tools for professionals, with Gravity Sketch launching earlier this year for Oculus and Steam.
MakeVR Pro is now available on Viveport for $39.99.
