ReCap Pro can create improved accuracy reports based on commonly-used registration targets, like checkerboards and spheres, to get the best accuracy

The new version of Autodesk ReCap Pro is heading your way, with the task of making 3D scanning easier and more accurate for all industries.

More than just a picture, the ReCap product line looks to give customers the ability to capture and integrate reality data directly into their design process – a car on the drive, a building project, your own beautiful-if-slightly-dented head.

ReCap Pro 1.4 looks to make it easier to check the quality of laser scans that you are feeding into the ReCap engine and turn the scans into 3D data models.

It’s a piece of professional kit, so for larger projects it can create improved accuracy reports based on commonly-used registration targets (checkerboards and spheres) and improve point cloud registration accuracy in low-feature environments.

It also has the ability to provides tools to more easily analyse, detect, and fix problematic laser scans and registrations.

“Autodesk is always looking for ways to make it easier for our customers to start 3D modeling based on reality, instead of a blank page,” said Robert Shear, senior director, Reality Solutions at Autodesk. “The latest release of ReCap Pro makes it easier for users to digitally document the physical world.”

Autodesk is really pushing its ‘Reality Computing’ as a concept to ‘integrate’ the digital and physical worlds.

As the press blurb states: “In Reality Computing, many different technologies are brought together in order to Capture, Compute, and Create 3D data and objects.

“Reality Computing technology – including the ReCap product line – allows users to digitally capture the existing conditions of objects and locations (laser scanning, photogrammetry, depth cameras), compute and analyse that captured data in design software, and then deliver the result back either physically (3D printing, digital manipulation) or visually (augmented reality, projection techniques).”

It’s an exciting development of Autodesk’s product line that fits well with what it’s been doing over the last few years, and shows the overall interest in ‘Reality Computing’ from 123D Catch on your smart phone handset; ReCap 360 for cameras, up to industrial quality products for laser scanning like ReCap Pro.
