Forget mobile Core i7, this mobile workstation from Eurocom sports a desktop 12-core Xeon processor

The Eurocom Panther 5: like no other mobile workstation we’ve seen before

Most mobile workstations peak at four CPU cores, but what if you want a mobile powerhouse for ray trace rendering or simulation but can’t quite fit your desktop workstation in your rucksack?

This is the idea behind the Eurocom Panther 5, a ‘mobile supercomputer’ that offers desktop Xeon processors instead of the mobile Core i7.

There’s a choice of 6, 8 or 12 core Intel Xeon E5 2600 V2 processors, 32 GB DDR3-1600 memory, four storage drives for up to 6TB in RAID 0/1/5/10, dual NVIDIA graphics (up to a Quadro K5x00M) to power its 17.3-inch FHD 1,920 x 1,080 display.

It’s certainly like no other mobile workstation we’ve seen before – ideal for ray trace rendering or computer aided engineering (CAE) which thrive on many core processors.

However, this kind of power does come at a price.

The Panther 5 weighs a whopping 12lbs (5.5kg) so you don’t really want to be lugging it round for the day, and with so many power hungry components inside we can’t imagine battery life is anything to get excited about.

Yet, while almost twice as deep as your average 17-inch mobile workstation, (58-62mm) in plan (419 x 286mm) it’s not that much bigger than a HP ZBook 17 or Dell Precision M6800.

The Panther 5 features four fans to keep the powerful processors running cool.

At 58-62mm the Panther 5 is deeper than other 17-inch mobile workstations, but not that much bigger in plan.
