CoLab has released AutoReview, its new AI system that automatically reviews 2D drawings and 3D models, which promises to boost productivity as well as ensure quality standards and reduce errors.
According to CoLab, design engineering teams are spending nearly a quarter of their time on administrative tasks, and suggests that its latest tool can automate these repetitive design checks to allow staff to focus on value-added design work.
Able to adhere to common standards and practices as well as company-specific design rules, it can validate models across CAD programmes, including PTC Creo, Siemens NX, Dassault Systèmes Solidworks and Catia.
AutoReview can also automatically identify design for manufacturing (DFM) optimisations. A given example of this is if a sharp internal corner had previously caused fatigue failures and warranty claims, AutoReview can flag similar geometry in a new design and surface that past feedback for the current design team to use.
CoLab CEO Adam Keating explained that AutoReview was brought to market a full six months ahead of schedule, but the progress from its team and response from Beta customers made it clear that it was ready.
“According to our survey of 250 engineering leaders, 23% of engineering time is currently spent on non-value-added work,” said Keating. “Even if AutoReview only replaces that portion, teams could reclaim nearly a quarter of their time.
“AI won’t replace engineering teams. But it will take on the repetitive decisions that slow engineers down, so they can spend more time solving hard problems and pushing the product forward. It will also protect engineering organisations from the wave of retirements and the threat of losing institutional knowledge,” continues Keating. “Fast forward a few years, engineering companies that don’t leverage AI to automate administrative tasks, prevent errors and reduce costs won’t stand a chance.”
AutoReview runs inside CoLab’s secure environment and works with existing PLM infrastructure, allowing teams to move files into review without taking them out of their governed systems, helping protect IP.
