UK copyright law extended to ‘life of the creator plus 70 years’
Published 23 May 2012
Posted by Stephen Holmes

Changes as part of the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill, announced today by the Government, will in practice means that owners of any copyrights in classic designs will be able to use copyright law to prevent the sale of unauthorised copies of such designs.
The repeal of section 52 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, which currently restricts copyright to 25 years on artistic works that are exploited through an industrial process, means that designs that qualify for copyright protection is to be enforceable to a term of ‘life of the creator plus 70 years’.
Legendary British design figure Sir Terence Conran has welcomed the changes, saying: “By protecting new designs more generously, we are encouraging more investment of time and talent in British design. That will lead to more manufacturing in Britain, and that in turn will lead to more jobs – which we desperately need right now.
“Properly protected design can help make the UK a profitable workshop again. We have the creative talent – let’s use it.”

World’s first consumer 3D printing show hits London this October
Published 23 May 2012
Posted by Stephen Holmes

With 3D printing technology becoming more readily available to creatives, makers, hackers and general swathes of humanity, it was only a matter of time till we could all converge at a dedicated event in the UK.
19 - 21 October will see 3D Print Show open its doors, not only to the usual clans of besuited and polo-necked trade people, but to anyone with a general interest in the technology.
MakerBot, i.materialise and Anarkik 3D will all be onsite at the event held at London’s The Brewery, along with your very own DEVELOP3D.

Objet launches new top model in its desktop 3D printing line
Published 22 May 2012
Posted by Stephen Holmes

The new Objet30 Pro – a seven material desktop 3D printer - looks likely to be the last piece of individual innovation from Objet before it’s merger with Stratasys.
Including clear transparent material and high temperature resistant materials for the first time in a desktop unit, the 300 x 200 x 150mm build tray, and ‘professional’ 28 micron print quality, it should prove useful for a wide range of industries wishing to build their own high quality prototypes.
Object’s desktop range begins at $19,900 for an entry level Objet24, although expect a jump in price to the top spec Objet30 Pro, especially seeing as the ‘standard’ Objet30 appears to have disappeared from the company website altogether. The expanded material capabilities will be available as an upgrade for those already with an Alaris30 or Objet30.
This follows on from the launch earlier this month of Stratasys’ Mojo, its $9,900 base model FDM desktop printer, as both sides seem to be pushing out non-conflicting products in preparation for the new family gathering.
