Best bars of 2011

The festive season is upon us, and of course, that means a chance to perhaps take a drink or two to celebrate the holiday season. But what about the rest of the year, when you can’t face eggnog or a glass of sherry with grandma?

Here’s our quick guide to the best places we’ve partook over the last year and if you’re local, they’re always worth a visit. And a word of warning. Leave your conference badge behind and skip the pleated Dockers.

#1: Barefoot Bobs, Hull, MA

Those that head to Boston often are missing a trick. Just around the bay, or indeed, a short hop on a ferry from Logan airport, is Hull. On the peninsula, it’s powered by two wind turbines and provides something you don’t get too often - real, down home joy. Hull is a little blue collar, a little run down and it’s fantastic - particularly if you’re looking for a break away from the high-rises and hustle and bustle of Boston. Barefoot Bob’s is on the beach front, you sit outside and it’s glorious if the sun is shining. I was also introduced to the delights of the Stuffed Quahog. Don’t ask, just order it.

Recommended order: A shot of DEVELOP3D’s rum of choice, Kraken, in a Dark & Stormy and a Quahog. You’ll rub your belly in delight. Then when you stand up, your legs won’t work properly. As it should be on a sunny afternoon.

Number 10 on the list: Nicholas O’Donnell-Hoare and Chloe McCormick’s 3D printed / hand woven spectacles

Another end of year collation of finery, but hang in there, these are my ten favourite products to have appeared on the pages (both physical and digital) of DEVELOP3D in 2011.

I’ve jotted a few words about why, on reflection, each story got my attention: They might not be the best designs of the year, or even of their genre, but there’s something about them that sparks more than a bit of my interest.

Feel free to drop a comment bomb about why I’m wrong, or even better, your choices from the past 12 months of DEVELOP3D wonderment.

10: 3D printed / handwoven spectacles

[see above]
One of the best things about working for DEVELOP3D is seeing what’s going in on in all spectra of design, and the futuristic element involved with new technologies. After another boom year for 3D Printing, Nicholas O’Donnell-Hoare and Chloe McCormick are part of a small clan of pioneering designers that prove it’s not just big industry that is pushing what can be done with new technology.

9: AEG Electrolux Nimble

It’s not often I’ve had the chance to get my dear ol’ Mam involved in an article on product design, but it genuinely helped. It’s also nice to see a company in the post-Dyson-revolution world that has some incredible ideas of its own. My Mam has offered to help with more features next year - suggestions please…

Get your product some attention: Make it TINY

Following yesterday’s marketing megatron from Behringer, today we’ve something minute that makes us look at the USB sticks littering our desks like a personal trainer surveying his customers post Christmas bingeing.

The Kingston DataTraveler Micro is designed in an ultra-small form factor that can be left in devices such as tablet PCs, slim notebooks, netbooks or car audio systems while on the move.

The tiny blue buds have a minuscule footprint, and come in both 8GB and 16GB -  giving a handy, but unobtrusive storage boost through your USB port.

Get your product some attention: Make it LARGE

Published 12 December 2011

Article tagged with: design, marketing, audio

Like manufacturers of yesteryear, making a giant product to get some attention in the shop window or trade fair of old, Behringer has launched into the consumer audio market with an iPod dock the size of a small hatchback car.

At 8ft by 4ft, the iNuke Boom is a monster that would set you back a smidgen under $30,000 if it weren’t a giant marketing gimmick.

It reminds me of when craftsmen would produce a super-sized version to show off their skills - begging the question: will this see a rise in product designers scaling up CAD models for a cheap plug on the design blogs?

Probably not… But I still want one.
